An alternative to the CHUV ER
Hospital emergencies or ambulatory emergencies?
An alternative to the CHUV emergency department
When faced with an urgent but non-life-threatening health problem, your first instinct may be to go to the emergency department at CHUV or another hospital. However, for many common situations, there’s another option available to you: medical walk-in clinics.
Located in Renens, just a few minutes from Lausanne, our medical center offers fast, no-appointment care for non-life-threatening emergencies for patients aged 16 and over.
Why consider an alternative to hospital emergency services?
Hospital emergency departments, such as those at CHUV, are essential for critical situations. However, in many cases (infections, moderate pain, minor injuries, fever, fatigue, etc.), a walk-in medical center can provide a quick and efficient response with less waiting time.
In hospitals, emergencies are prioritized according to the severity of each case, based on the Swiss triage scale. If you go to CHUV’s emergency department for a non-critical issue, you’ll be seen only after many patients with more serious conditions, which significantly increases your waiting time.
Our medical walk-in center: local and responsive care
At the Centre Médical Gare de Renens, we offer non-life-threatening emergency care without an appointment, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Our physicians are trained in general medicine and emergency care, supported by experienced nurses, medical assistants, and modern facilities (laboratory and radiology) that allow for quick and accurate testing.
If necessary, a rapid transfer to a hospital—including CHUV—can be organized for further examinations or specialized monitoring.
Complementary emergency care to CHUV
Our role is not to replace the CHUV emergency department or that of the Morges hospital, but to support them by directing patients to care suited to their condition.
By choosing a medical walk-in clinic for a non-life-threatening emergency, you help reduce hospital congestion while receiving fast, high-quality care.
We also assess the severity of each case to ensure every patient receives the most appropriate level of care.
When someone presents with an acute condition requiring hospital care, we provide initial treatment and stabilization on-site, and quickly organize their transfer to the hospital. Meanwhile, our team monitors the patient’s condition and provides the necessary support until the ambulance arrives.
